Reasons Why You Should Consider a Career in Real Estate
Carol Evenson
Whether you’ve been playing around with the idea of getting into real estate or the thought is completely new to you, here are a few reasons why you should consider it.
Are you in the beginning stages of determining your career path? Perhaps you’ve been in your current career for a while now and you feel it’s time for a change. Many people are moving to a career in real estate. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment in the real estate field is expected to grow 7% between 2018 and 2028.
You Can Be Your Own Boss
Many people can’t stand having someone looking over their shoulder all day, micromanaging every little thing they do. Instead, they dream of being the one in charge.
With a career in real estate, you’re essentially running your own small business. You may work under (and have to occasionally report to) a broker, but the dynamic is very different than the traditional boss/employee relationship.
How you grow your business is up to you, but your broker is there to provide guidance and review your contracts to make sure that everything is in order.
You Get More Freedom
As a real estate agent, you have a lot more freedom. Where you set up your office is up to you, whether it’s a spare room in your home or a rented office space. You get to set your own schedule, which gives you the ability to carve out time for the things you want to do, like go to your kid’s soccer game or meet up with your spouse for a long lunch.
You may have to work odd hours and work around your clients’ schedules, but for the most part, you set your own hours.
Speaking of clients, you get to determine how many you take on. If you only want to be a real estate agent on the side, you can take just a few. Or, if you want to make real estate a full-time career, you can take on more.
It’s a Fairly Easy Career to Get Into
Getting into real estate is fairly easy, especially when compared with some other career paths. You will need to get licensed in the state where you plan to work. If you’re in New York, for instance, you will need to earn your real estate license ny.
You can take courses in person. If you need more flexibility, you can take courses and earn your license online. While it still takes a lot of hard work and dedication, the path to getting into real estate is very accessible.
There’s Big Earning Potential
In real estate, your earning potential isn’t limited by an hourly or salaried wage. The only limits are you and how you grow your business. While real estate can be lucrative, it won’t happen overnight.
It takes time, dedication, and hard work. Focus on your clients, their needs, and their satisfaction. Happy clients are more likely to recommend you to others, which can then help you to grow your business.
You’ll Never Get Bored
The monotony of doing the same thing every day can lead to boredom and job dissatisfaction. This isn’t a problem in real estate. The real estate market and real estate trends are constantly changing. There are always new challenges awaiting you. If you thrive in this kind of environment, you'll be satisfied with your career in real estate.
You Get to Help People
Real estate is the perfect career for those who like to help people. You get to help people through the process of buying their first home, downsizing or upgrading to a new home, or purchasing a vacation home. Seeing the joy on your clients’ faces and helping them to find the perfect place to call home can bring ultimate satisfaction.
Creativity and a love of learning are important attributes for those thinking about a career in real estate. If you love working with (and helping) people, want to be your own boss, and set your own schedule, real estate could be the perfect fit for you.
