I have heard people say that becoming a paramedic was the best decision of their lives. Though the hours are tough, there are sacrifices that they make, but the satisfaction that they get when they save a person's life is the greatest. However, there is a lengthy procedure that one has to follow, in order to get into this profession.

EMT Training

The first thing that you need to do is undergo the first level of training, i.e. a basic certification course for an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). This basic course will enable you to learn all the critical skills required to save a person's life.

EMT Job Description

Taking up an EMT job will help you experience what is it like to be a paramedic. You should continue this job for at least 12 to 18 months. You will need to understand different methods of emergency preparedness while on this job.

Course

An EMT is not allowed to prescribe any medications, however, a paramedic is. This is due to the very long and detailed course that he goes through. This course teaches them how to save lives of people and administer medications and drugs to them.
A certified course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid is also required to be completed. Next, you will have to appear for a state exam or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam in order to get your certificate and license to work as a paramedic.

Working on the Job

Now, you will get a job depending on how good you have done in your exams and on your previous job as an EMT. Once you start working, remember that you will need to renew your license every two years.

Paramedic Job Description

A paramedic is expected to always work in stressful conditions, always treat people with care, be able to lift heavy objects, and be able to keep his calm while dealing with sick and injured people.
He also needs to be physically fit as this job is physically demanding. Paramedics may have to work anywhere between 40 to 60 hours a week and may be required to work overtime in case of emergencies. An EMT earns around $35,000 to $48,000 annually, while a paramedic usually earns up to $80,000 annually.
Finally, the job of a paramedic is a very rewarding job, but it is also very demanding. However, if you possess all the qualities required for this profession, then you should consider this career option..
